relating to the fiscal cliff is dana bash. she joins me now from washington. dana, great to see you again. tell me does even a band-aid approach work? >> it's going to be tough. this is all math. but it really has to do with the math with regard to votes. and democrats especially who i'm talking to in the senate which is probably where this will originate, the reality is that democrats don't hold a very big majority. her going to need to have a handful of republicans to cross party lines and vote with them on the whole concept of raising any taxes. especially what the president wants which is something that is raising taxes on all americans making more than $250,000. that's the senate. never mind the house, which of course, made clear to the house speaker that they won't even go for something that's a million dollars or more when it comes to tax increases. that was last week. >> dana, you were saying that when you were reporting on it when it was breaking that evening, you called that devastating for john boehner. now that house republicans have clearly rebelled against john boehner, can

. first we will start with the cold. 32 in washington. 32 leonardtown. north and west 20s in manassas. 27 in frederick. 27 in winchester. plenty of cold air across the area. that will be a factor in the forecast particularly north and west as things will be slow to warm up. clouds to start your day. maybe a break early but i think for the most part nice and cloudy. you can see the beginnings of our next storminess off to the south and west. it's coming up in the form of rain. what will be happening, let me mention this system is not terribly organized. it doesn't have a lot of moisture. it's pushing to the washington area. an area of low pressure will move to the west. we will be in the warm sector. things will gradually warm up in the upper 30s to 40. that will warm up to rain showers this afternoon. off to the west and north you will be slower to warm up. you can see a mix. by mix i mean probably a few snowflakes, maybe sleet mixing in as the whole thing moves through. a fast mover, it will start at 1:00, 2:00 and out of here by 8:00 or 9:00. the farther east of the city the better chan

gorani here in washington, d.c. in for brooke baldwin. grief today is shattering the christmas eve quiet on a sleepy town in new york. this is how it looked around 6:00 in the morning today. there was a massive house fire that ravaged homes overlooking lake ontario. the house fire spread as firefighters tried to dodge gunfire. the firefighters apparently walked into a trap just as they were responding to this. at last word, two firefighters are dead, three other first responders are wounded, and alleged gunman is dead. authorities can't say whether other bodies might be found in the eight homes destroyed or damaged by the fire in the town of webster. shocking, bizarre, tragic today. cnn's poppy harlow is in new york, trying to piece together this horrible chain of events here on christmas eve. so what happened, because authorities are saying potentially this was a trap laid out for the firefighters. >> that's what the police chief gerald pickering said in the last press conference, we're awaiting right now another press conference that should start any minute. but he did say that it appe

inouye's funeral yesterday, along with other washington insiders, including his friend senator harry reid. he represented hawaii in congress ever since it became a state in 1959 and was the second-longest serving senator in u-s history. inouye received the medal of honor for his heroism during world war two. inouye died a week ago at accepts total responsibility senator michael crapo was arrested in virginia shortly after midnight, saturday night. alexandria police say the idaho republican ran a red light, then failed several field sobriety tests. police say crapo's blood alcohol level was point-one- one ; the legal limit for drivers in virginia is point-oh-eight. in a statement released by his office, crapo said he was -- quote -- "deeply sorry for the actions that resulted in this limit in virginia. the deputy police chief says an investigation is underway to determine whether the killing was intentional or accidental. it was not known whether the victim was a military orthe nato military command says it's looking into the bay area's favorite way the biggest parties and heenan and gary
